Does Abstinence Sex Ed Increase Risky Sex?

August 1, 2008

Are Teens Healthier When They Know About Condoms? Mr. Condom Seems to Like the Idea. has posted an interesting video on some research published in an ’06 issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health, suggesting that teaching about abstinence increases rates of risky adolescence sex. The original article makes some excellent points about the difference between the choice to abstain from sex and abstinence-only sexuality education, including the lack of a solid definition for the latter. The video reviews the research, drawing attention to rates for teen sex and advocating for comprehensive sex education, which is generally defined as promoting delaying or abstaining from sex while also providing knowledge and resources for those who do, or will, engage in intercourse or other forms of sexual activity. publishes doctor-reviewed videos compiled from information found at various medical and sexual health sites online, including journals. They also scan newspapers and magazines for interesting information. Thanks to John S. of for suggesting this topic!

Good reading, with an interesting video. You know where I stand on sex ed of adolescents, tell me what you think!

Ideal. I mean, kids and young adults don’t always think about the consequences of their actions. Realistic? Not at all. Because kids and young adults will have sex, regardless of adults encouraging him or her to wait. Might as well inform the kids with the best sex education possible – that way, they are prepared (as best is possible) to make healthy decisions when the time comes.

I’m all for open, honest and medically accurate sex education. I’m happy that some condom companies are starting to feel the same. One Condoms (, in addition to providing a superior and unique product, donates 5% of it’s sales to the One Voice Foundation which encourages progressive sex education.
